History of AMA

The American Medaka Association (AMA) was founded in 2025 with a simple but vital goal: to build a trustworthy and ethical medaka community in the United States.

As the popularity of Japanese rice fish grew rapidly across North America, so did concerns around misinformation, egg scams, and the decline of true strain integrity. In response, a group of passionate medaka keepers and breeders came together to form AMA—not as a marketplace, but as a movement.

Why AMA Was Created

  • To promote ethical breeding practices and stop illegal egg imports.
  • To preserve the identity and history of each medaka strain.
  • To recognize and honor the original creators (作出者).
  • To create a space where hobbyists, breeders, and educators can connect without commercial pressure.

Milestones

2025 — AMA was launched with its founding principles—no egg sales, verified sources, and a community-first philosophy; the “Clean Medaka Movement” campaign began; and the first certified breeder list was published.

2026 (planned) — First Annual Medaka Exhibition & Show.

AMA continues to grow thanks to its dedicated members and their shared vision for a cleaner, more transparent future in the medaka world.
