At the American Medaka Association (AMA), our core mission is to preserve the cultural heritage, genetic integrity, and beauty of Japanese rice fish (medaka) in the United States.
We are a nonprofit community focused not on sales, but on education, ethical breeding, and shared appreciation. Our efforts aim to unite hobbyists, breeders, and medaka enthusiasts around a common set of values that ensure the medaka we keep and share are healthy, traceable, and respected.
What We Stand For
-
Transparency
We verify strain origin and honor the creators (作出者). Only medaka with traceable lineages and known fixation rates are recognized within our community. -
No Egg Sales Policy
To protect the health and authenticity of medaka strains, AMA does not support or allow the sale of medaka eggs. -
Legal and Ethical Importing
All medaka entering the U.S. must come through proper inspection and with legal documentation. We strictly oppose illegal egg imports. -
Stable Strain Standards
We recognize only strains with a minimum of 60% fixation. We encourage stabilization through responsible, long-term breeding efforts. -
Community Over Competition
Our community promotes mutual support, respectful dialogue, and ethical collaboration. Criticism, gatekeeping, and toxic behaviors have no place in AMA. -
Knowledge Sharing
We support educational outreach, resource sharing, and mentorship across all levels of experience, from beginner keepers to advanced breeders.
Why It Matters
The global rise in medaka interest has brought both opportunity and risk. As the U.S. medaka scene grows, AMA exists to preserve its integrity—protecting true Japanese strains, preventing misinformation, and fostering a safe, welcoming environment for all.
We believe that keeping medaka requires tradition, care, and truth.
